Underrated Show - 1/04/10

These were many of my very favorite bands playing some of my very favorite jams and bands I would also consider vastly underrated in the grand scheme of things. Really, of course, ALL post-punk and new wave music is underrated. Far too often dismissed as style over substance, post-punk was incredibly innovative, diverse, and creative in a way music had not seen before nor has since. That said, there certainly were some bands that managed to persevere and while never completely break through to the mainstream in America, still attracted legions of fans who respect them (The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, etc.). Then there were some that managed to earn the respect of snobby critics too (Devo, Elvis Costello, Joy Division, Talking Heads, etc.) These guys were left off of my underrated show but hopefully know I will always love them too. The bands I featured tonight were ones I felt should have either been recognized as being truly great or at least relegated to more than one-dimensional 80s nostalgia. I know there are those out there who do recognize this and it's been my life's pleasure to be a part of your club. Hopefully history will join us soon.

Hey Alex,

I came upon this site by accident but I really like it and am especially looking forward to listening to some of the playlists you have available for listening. I might even sign up to get the podcasts. I am polishing up a postpunk mix I made for my friend who is currently in Indonesia. I think it needs one more song, but I'm having trouble picking. It's in the modern vein, with artists like Interpol, Love of Diagrams (you need to check them out--I think you would love them), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The XX, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The whole mix has an overwhelming sense of dark, foreboding, stylish, and sleek sounds, with a sort of glam spin on it. Got any recommendations? Let me know! Thanks.

Hey Nathan and Carlos,

Thanks so much for the listening and for the good recommendations (and you're absolutely right, Nathan, I do really like Love of Diagrams!). As for that playlist, it definitely seems like Ladytron would fit perfectly in there although you probably already have them in. The Faint? The Horrors? Ghostland Observatory? Something off the 1st Editors album? "Black Eyes" by Snowden? I could probably go on and on.

And Carlos, good call on The Sound. I think I played them only a couple times over the last 4 years and wish I would have played them more. I actually only recently got their "Shock of Daylight" EP and was surprised how much I liked it.

Alex - I'm thoroughly enjoying your podcast's thematic approach to post-punk! I'm listening to all the previous episodes in one huge marathon!

So far I've been able to find everything except for 2007-06-11 and earlier: http://xelasennagalese.blogspot.com/2007/06/61107-show-classics.html -- those links are all dead.

Do you have any plans for re-uploading those old shows? I'd love to hear them!

Hey Tripecac,

That's great! I'm so glad you found me! I deleted those older shows you mention from my online storage thing because I ran out of space. I can get them to you though. Send me an email at alex@toysforbob.com.

Great article you got here. It would be great to read a bit more about that topic. The only thing this blog needs is a few pictures of any gadgets.

I don't have a blogspot account, but I wanted to chime in here. I have a dark post-punk band called The Closure, based right here out of San Francisco, which obviously takes many cues from primarily the post-punk bands of the "Golden Age," but I have a few more modern, outside influences like Massive Attack and godspeed you! black emperor. Anyway, I'm glad I found this blog. There's not much of a modern-day scene, and that's pretty sad, as I agree that this genre is incredibly interesting, innovative, unique (and a host of other healthy adjectives). Both the genre and my own band are things that I want to promote the hell out of, so yeah. You can find us on both Myspace and YouTube. Anyhow, keep up the good work.
